This coalition of political parties and civil society associations supports Ousmane Sonko, the opponent accused of allegedly raping an employee of a massage parlor. This deal had led to riots that left 13 dead. After the government last month, M2D in turn reversed its version of events.
It is a 55-page document, including appendices. In this memorandum, M2D states that it wants to “restore the truth” and “restore facts”. After several days of bloody riotsthe movement had suspended its calls for demonstrations, after mediation by the caliph’s general for Mourides. But he now believes that his demands have not been met.
“Since then, President Macky Sall has failed to fulfill his commitments. We’ve done our part of the deal. We’re sure the caliph told him everything we asked. Again he broke his promise. At present, there are still young Senegalese in prison, says Cheikh Tidiane Dièye. The M2D coordinator adds: “We will demonstrate as needed.”
M2D demands a “quick, diligent, impartial and honest” trial in the Sonko case
Ousmane Sonko, present in the room, did not speak. The opponent is free, but under legal supervision. The movement for the defense of democracy demands trial as soon as possible. M2D demands that the Ousmane Sonko case be subjected to prompt, diligent, impartial and honest legal proceedings. We will see immediately that all this was just a composition “, explains Cheikh Tidiane Dièye.
On April 8, the government announced an “independent commission of inquiry” into the protests in March. “Since then, no action has been taken, we have not been contacted and we do not believe in it,” concludes the M2D coordinator.
