floods in Dakar and several other places

In Senegal, the rains in recent days have already caused damage in several districts of Dakar as well as in several places in the country. These floods are repeated every year during the rainy season, to the great despair of the population. RFI went to the Rufisque district, which was particularly affected.

as reported from Dakar, Thea Ollivier

Pools and pools of water are moving on the sandy beaches of Rufisque where cars and carriages are difficult to pass.

Omar Diop, a resident of the neighborhood, has been installing concrete blocks at the entrance to his house since 2004 to protect it from floods. But the water is still rising over her ankles, in the entire courtyard of her house, in the toilets and in her parents’ bedroom. The bed, the feet in the water … difficult to sleep, not to mention the inability to use sanitary facilities.

A little longer, the same situation for Irma Sall. Her daughter drains the water from the various rooms with large seals that she throws on the street, a situation that despairs the neighbor, Clément Ntab, who calls for government intervention to install real pipes.

In September last year, Macky Sall announced 30 billion CFA francs to finance flood management. But they were repeated in the districts of Mbao, Keur Massar, Parcelles Assainies of Dakar or in the cities of Touba and Mbacké.

Rain is still expected for the coming week.
