Since Friday, December 18, a coalition of armed groups has been on the run in the Central African Republic. They move around the country towards the capital Bangui and create uncertainty in several regions. After a relative calm, this Monday 21 December, the fighting resumed this Tuesday morning.

as reported from Bangui, Charlotte cosset

Battle takes place in the city of Bambari, in the middle of the country, between parts of the armed group UPC [Unité pour la paix en Centrafrique] and the Central African Armed Forces.

Right now, the situation is a little worrying.

Competitions are reported about ten kilometers from the city of Sibut. There would also be contacts on the main axis between the cities of Bossembélé and Boali, where reinforcements from armed groups would have arrived during the night. In the city of Boali, the situation is still quite calm. It is currently difficult to confirm this information. The telephone signal is currently being cut in the town of Bossembélé. Reinforcement of armed men is also reported a few kilometers from Mbaiki.

Bangui goal?

After the relatively calm Monday, December 21, it seems as if a new coordinated offensive is underway. The coalition’s goals remain uncertain: go down to Bangui or prevent the vote from taking place? A team from the National Election Authority was directly targeted yesterday in the middle of the country. And this Tuesday morning, in Bossangoa, anti-balaka chased away voters who came to take their cards from City Hall with weapons, but without firing.

Five days before the election, the official position remains the same: The election will take place on Sunday, December 27. Campaign cars circulate in the capital. The National Electoral Authority has not yet made an official update on the situation.
