This week, the Kenya Navy and Coast Guard took significant strides in maritime safety through joint drills with the European Union’s naval task force.

During the final week of October, a simulated search and rescue (SAR) operation was conducted, featuring the ESPS Santa Maria (F81), currently serving as Operation Atalanta’s flagship. Alongside Kenyan naval assets and coast guard personnel, this exercise showcased joint protocols for executing SAR missions. The Kenyan Coast Guard received invaluable training through Go Blue, a joint initiative focused on boosting the blue economy along Kenya’s extensive 600-kilometer coastline.

The SAR drills transitioned seamlessly into maritime interdiction actions, where boarding teams engaged in at-sea maneuvers alongside the Kenyan research vessel KHS Shujaa.

The relationship between Atalanta and Kenya, as noted by the EU naval forces, has been solidified through initiatives like Exercise Usalama Baharini. This groundbreaking event, held six months ago, underscored the importance of collaboration and a shared understanding of operational capabilities.

“Atalanta is woven into the maritime strategy of this region and exemplifies EU defense policy and naval diplomacy,” remarked an EU naval representative. “It plays a pivotal role in bolstering EU operations here, including the engagement with the EU Delegation to Kenya. Such mutual cooperation guarantees that our efforts are executed efficiently, enhancing our comprehensive strategy for the region.”
