U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday, March 10, condemned “ethnic cleansing” in western Tigray, citing the presence of Eritrean forces and the nearby Amhara region. Charges strongly rejected by Addis Ababa.
“These are completely unfounded and false accusations, and nothing can be defined as targeted ethnic cleansing against anyone in the region.” So this is Ethiopia’s response to Antony Blinken’s words, which are real accusations from the United States, said the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry, whose statement, however, ended on a more appealing tone: Ethiopia commits itself to working closely with the current US administration for to “strengthen and stimulate the bilateral relationship in the future”.
These last tremors come as the tone change on the American side has been spectacular since Joe Biden took office. The new president demanded the immediate evacuation of Eritrean troops present on Ethiopian soil, the opposite of his predecessor, who stressed Ethiopia’s right to restore order in Tigray. Donald Trump even congratulated himself on the reluctance of the Eritrean neighbor.
Remember that recently two NGOs, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, revealed that hundreds of civilians died in November last year in Tigray, killed by Eritrean soldiers.
