In Chad, the opposition says it is disappointed with the decision of the heads of state of the Central African Economic Community (ECCAS) to adapt to the choice of the African Union to support the June military that has taken power since April 20, after Idriss Deby Itno was killed.
The ECCAS decision was taken on Friday, 4 June, during an extraordinary summit in Brazzaville, which examined the political and security situation in Chad.
The Chadian opposition condemns a decision consolidating power in the Transitional Military Council led by Mahamat Idriss Déby and “opening the way for settlement in power”, according to Brice Mbaïmon, president of the opposition Mouvement des patriotes tchadiens pour la République (MPTR) Guedmbaye, came fourth in the last presidential election.
“We are upset. We are disappointed with the attitude of the African Union, which had simply decided to allow the military junta to develop, so, and secondly, we thought that ECCAS would take its responsibility with respect for the principles. Unfortunately, the Chadians have remained defenseless, as this behavior opens the way for a regime to settle down. Recently, you have seen decisions made and appointments made without taking into account a minimum of consensus to be sought in such cases. So for us, it means that today we are facing a military power that is managed, outside of total consensus and dialogue, we talk about it less and less. All of this is part of the fact that there really is a kind of complacency, but I would even say some involvement of the African Union and ECCAS to let the military junta take power, he said. RFI.
