US President Joe Biden sent an envoy to Ethiopia to meet with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Despite Ethiopian denials, the United States does not relax the pressure and is very offensive to Addis Ababa because of the crimes committed in Tigray.
Since a few weeks, Washington is intensifying initiatives and statements aimed at bending Ethiopia. And this time, it’s Democratic Senator Chris Coons, a very close friend of new US President Joe Biden, who flew to Addis Ababa on Thursday.
The White House said it would express “serious concerns about the humanitarian crisis and human rights violations in the Tigray region and the risk of further instability in the Horn of Africa.” Chris Coons must also “consult” the African Union, Washington said, “to promote the region’s common interests for peace and prosperity.”
Ethiopia, which has so far denied all mediation and condemned foreign “interference”, has not yet commented. Only a concession of diplomatic pressure was given: on Wednesday, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights accepted the proposal of the Ethiopian National Human Rights Commission to set up a mechanism for joint investigation of crimes committed since the outbreak of war in Tigray in November.
