In a heartfelt display of solidarity, workers across Ireland took a moment to reflect on the ongoing violence in Gaza.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) recently called for a moment of respectful reflection during lunchtime. This initiative is a simple yet powerful way to remember the lives lost over the past 18 months. As Owen Reidy, ICTU General Secretary, aptly stated, “As the appalling violence in Gaza continues, our members felt it was crucial for the trade union movement to lead in reflecting on this tragic loss of life.”

Coinciding with this call for reflection, today marks the International UN Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. “This day offers a poignant opportunity to pause and contemplate the horrific events unfolding in Gaza and their devastating impact, especially on the children who have suffered immensely,” Mr. Reidy remarked.

Workers were encouraged to observe this moment of reflection with respect, whether at their workplaces, at home, or in any suitable setting. It’s important to note that this moment was not intended as a work stoppage; ICTU advised participants to coordinate with their employers where feasible.

In a show of unity, SIPTU staff and members gathered at 1:05 PM at Butt Bridge in Dublin, right across from the ‘Ceasefire Now’ banner displayed on Liberty Hall. This action exemplified the collective spirit and commitment to raising awareness about the ongoing situation in Gaza.

In moments of crisis, our ability to stand together and reflect can bring hope amidst despair.
