Emergency services reported that some of the injured sustained life-threatening injuries, although the precise count remains uncertain. “A person injured several people with a knife at the main train station,” a police spokesperson commented, noting that a suspect had been apprehended shortly after the incident.
The incident unfolded around 6:30 PM local time (5 PM Irish time), leading Hamburg police to initiate what they described as a “major operation.” Forensic experts have since started investigations on the railway platform, working diligently to piece together the circumstances surrounding the attack.
A spokesperson for the Hamburg fire department stated, “Twelve individuals have been injured in the knife attack,” with six of those injuries categorized as life-threatening. However, reports from German media suggest that the actual number of severe injuries may be lower.
Security Concerns
The attack occurred during the rush hour at the end of the workweek, according to various sources. The suspect is believed to have targeted passengers at the station, as noted by a spokeswoman for the Hanover federal police directorate, which oversees Hamburg’s security.
Images capturing the scene depict police blocking access to various platforms, while individuals were transported to waiting ambulances. Some victims received medical treatment on board nearby trains, as reported by Bild.
The German rail operator, Deutsche Bahn, announced via X that four platforms at the Hamburg station were subsequently closed in response to the attack.
Germany has faced a troubling string of violent incidents in recent months, many motivated by jihadist or far-right extremist ideologies, raising significant security concerns. Just last Sunday, four individuals were injured in a stabbing at a bar in Bielefeld, highlighting the ongoing challenges. Following that incident, federal prosecutors took charge of the investigation, especially after the apprehended suspect revealed jihadist beliefs.
The issue of security and the immigrant background of many attackers became a hot-button topic during Germany’s recent election campaign. The conservative CDU/CSU emerged as front-runners, while the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party achieved historic support, securing over 20 percent of the vote.
These developments reinforce pressing security discussions as authorities and communities strive to restore a sense of safety and order.
