The incident was witnessed by another teenager, who promptly raised the alarm, allowing KWS to respond quickly. In their statement, KWS noted, “Rangers and response teams were swiftly mobilised and traced bloodstains leading to the Mbagathi River, where the girl’s body was recovered with injuries on the lower back.”
In light of this tragedy, the KWS announced that a trap has been set for the lion and that teams are currently combing the area. Additional safety measures are also being implemented to protect local communities.
This unfortunate event follows the death of a 54-year-old man, who was also killed by an elephant in Nyeri County just a few days earlier, on Friday. In their statement, KWS expressed their sorrow, saying, “KWS conveys its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and continues to work closely with local law enforcement and communities to enhance the safety of people living near protected wildlife areas.”
Highlighting the urgent need for proactive approaches, KWS emphasized the importance of investing in “human-wildlife conflict mitigation,” which includes developing early warning systems and fostering cooperation with affected communities.
As we reflect on these tragic events, it becomes increasingly clear that collaboration and investment in safety measures are vital to protecting both people and wildlife. Only through understanding and cooperation can we hope to prevent such incidents in the future.
