Wolfsburg 2-3 Bayern Munich: Player ranking

A glorious first half from Jamal Musiala, dressed on both sides by an Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting strike, gave Bayern Munich a 3-2 victory over Wolfsburg in a vibrant Bundesliga match.

Die Roten broke the deadlock after 15 minutes when Alphonso Davies drove brilliantly into the box before releasing the ball to 18-year-old Musiala, who somehow angled through a couple of challenges before firing Koen Casteels.

Bayern then led twice nine minutes later in a comical way, when Choupo-Moting punished Casteel’s unfortunate clap from David Alaba’s cross.

The hosts came back into the match when Thomas Muller’s sloppy pass eventually led to Wout Weghorst clinically curling past Manuel Neuer, only to have Musiala immediately hit home a wonderful header for his sixth Bundesliga goal of the season – a record for a young player.

Maxi Philipp’s goal ten minutes after the break threatened to burst Bayern’s winning bubble, but Hansi Flick’s side survived late pressure to inflict a first home defeat for Wolfsburg on the season. The win restores Bayern’s seven-point cushion at the top of the Bundesliga, which was helped by RB Leipzig’s inability to beat TSG Hoffenheim on Friday night.

This is how Bayern’s player ratings were shaped …

Manuel Neuer (GK) – 7/10 – Clinical finish gave him little chance to keep any of the goals, but the captain made an incredible and decisive stop in the second half.

Benjamin Pavard (RB) – 7/10 – Usually calm, collected and efficient in possession, rarely giving away the ball when he lifts his head.

Jerome Boateng (CB) – 6/10 – Calm on the ball, Boateng maintained a pass accuracy of 89% – but made a series of challenging challenges to give away stupid free kicks.Lucas Hernandez (CB) – 6/10 – Be quick to get around and cover Boateng when needed, and were usually quiet in possession.

Alphonso Davies (LB) – 8/10 – Tracked well back to keep things quiet on his side, but was mainly involved in the future. Really dangerous around the box and registered a lovely assist for Musiala’s first.

Joshua Kimmich (CM) – 6/10 – Recovered the ball nicely and did well to effectively drive the ball out of deep positions. Unusually quiet.David Alaba (CM) – 7/10 – Was brilliantly energetic and covered a lot of ground to make seven ball recoveries. Made some brilliant swinging runs but was largely ineffective when the ball came to him in advanced areas.Thomas Muller (AM) – 6/10 – Looked completely out of step throughout the game, played sloppy passes and often lost possession – especially made the mistake that led to Wolfsburg’s first. In a typical Muller way, however, he managed a moment of quality to get his 17th assist from the Bundesliga season for his team’s third.

The future is bright. ✨

Leroy Sane (RW) – 2/10 – Absolutely miserable. Should have had a hat trick but missed three great chances outside the goal and could not really get into the game at all. Showed no threat, no end product and very little quality.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (ST) – 7/10 – Looks sharp from the start and had really nice features on the ball. Showed great reactions to check and score from Casteel’s fault.

Jamal Musiala (LW) – 9/10 – Watched his sides’ greatest danger all the time and made a magical stay in the first half. The star’s attraction.

No more #MusialaMagic today. @ JamalMusiala replaced by Kingsley #Coman?
