The 25 best goalkeepers in football in the world

Look, it’s really hard to put together a list of the top 25 players in any position.

But it’s a lot of fun and arouses debate – and it’s football, is it?

So here’s your current list of the 25 best goalkeepers on the planet right now, according to 90min.

Real Sociedad have had some super talented players make their kit in recent seasons, and Alex Remiro has impressed himself since coming permanently from rivals Athletic after a couple of loans.

Dean Henderson has some work to do to become Man Utd’s permanent number one, but the fact that he is considered (potentially) better than a player who sits much higher than him on this list earns him a place.

Henderson had a fantastic debut season in the Premier League and is also on his way to becoming England’s number one – while a number of other big clubs are interested in paying big bucks to get him.

Chelsea’s current number one may deserve his presence here after his solid first campaign in the Premier League – stepping in for the much criticized Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Mendy is something of a late-bloomer in terms of football, but has really shown his value since Thomas Tuchel tightened up the Blues’ back line.

Moroccan international Yassine Bounou – commonly known as Bono – has emerged as one of the finest stoppers in La Liga since moving to Sevilla.

He performed heroically when his team won the Europa League last season (Manchester United fans will remember the semi-final well) and he continued his form this season as well.

Remarkably, he even made a late equalizer for his side in a 1-1 draw for Valladolid.

Unai Simon is a regular in the Spanish national team and deserves his place in the top 25.

An indispensable part of Bilbao’s effective football machine is Unai Simon, who has gone seamlessly into Kepa’s shirt since leaving Chelsea.

He’s big and he loves to save shots. We present Bayer Leverkusen’s stopper Lukas Hradecky – the best Finnish goalkeeper since Antti Niemi.

Hradecky cut his teeth at Eintracht Frankfurt and won Goalkeeper of the Year at the end of the 2017/2018 season. This made him move to Leverkusen where he has continued to impress ever since.

With the points level in the final of Euro 2016, Dimitri Payet floated a pass to Antoine Griezmann. The then Atletico Madrid man met it with his head and made the ball wind up and apparently over a beaten Rui Patricio in the Portuguese goal.

In an instant, Patricio then swung back and threw out a hand to tip it over the crossbar in a short time.

The moment has been immortalized by a bronze statue erected in his hometown and although 90 minutes may not really offer him the same glory, we hope he is still happy with a place on our list.

Tipped as Hugo Llori’s long-term successor to France, Mike Maignan – even though he sounds like a singer from a country and Western wedding band – is among the high-flying Lille’s best players.

The interest that Maignan has aroused from Premier League sides such as Chelsea, Dortmund and Spurs may mean that he does not stay there for much longer.

What an upswing it has been for Emi Martinez over the past year.

Throwing in the Arsenal spotlight at the end of last season, the Argentine took the move to Aston Villa to play regular football and has proved that he is really, really bloody.

He may be one of the oldest looking 30-year-olds of all time, but there is no doubt that Peter Gulacsi is pretty good at this whole goalkeeper.

His football trip is not the most conventional. After being signed by Liverpool in 2008, the Hungarian spent time on loan at Hereford United a year later.

Wondering if he ever thought he would play in the Champions League while standing in the icy cold of Edgar Street? Pretty story it.

Borussia Mönchengladbach have performed miracles in the Bundesliga in recent seasons, despite their modest budget. Their determined defense has been a part of their success.

When teams finally break through their stoic resistance, it also helps to have such a talented goalkeeper as Yann Sommer – widely regarded as BuLi’s best (besides the obvious) – between the sticks.

No matter how many fingertips he saves, no matter how many shots he hits, Bernd Leno lives in constant fear of the players in front of him making a brainless mistake to cost him his clean sheets.

Stepping up as captain in the absence of Wes Morgan has not had a negative effect on Kasper Schmeichel’s performance for Leicester.

Denmark’s international has seen it all during his time at King Power Stadium and is still an important cog in Brendan Rodger’s football revolution and one of the Premier League’s most reliable stoppers.

In the midst of all the chaos in Milan in recent seasons, one thing that has never been in doubt is Gianluigi Donnarumma’s ability.

Without a contract in the summer, there are a lot of clubs who hope that he can decide to leave Milan and spend the next 15 years in his goal – but as it looks, it is likely that he will sign and stay.

Due to the mistakes that have come into his game, there has been some discussion about David de Gea’s Manchester United future in recent seasons – it must be resolved this summer.

The questions of whether he has passed his best are legitimate, but if history is anything to go by, the Spaniard will enjoy proving that his doubters are wrong.

Still Spurs number one, but for how long? | FRANCK FIFE / Getty Images

He is still the first choice for Spurs and France, and still one of the best goalkeepers around. But Hugo Lloris may not be at that top level anymore.

There is uncertainty about where Lloris will play his football next season with the Spurs in crisis (at least sometimes) and you can be sure that there would be a number of interested if he stops forcing an exit next year or two.

Inter-legend Samir Handanovic shows few signs of letting go.

The Nerazzurri are in place to win Serie A this season and it would be a fitting highlight for the Slovenian (so far) trophy-free career if he could get a Scudetto.

Let it happen please.

Slipping into Gianluigi Buffon’s gloves would never be easy but Wojciech Szczesny has completed the transfer in a convincing way.

The Polish stopper was excellent for Roma after leaving Arsenal in 2015 and he has continued to impress in Turin. Juventus will need him in top form for the rest of the season as well.

Unclear football nations often produce talented goalkeepers and Costan Rica’s stopper Keylor Navas is an example.

After being unfairly replaced at Real Madrid by Thibaut Courtois for not being Galactico enough, Keylor Navas has established himself as Paris Saint-Germain’s number one and remains among the best in the game.

After a shaky opening at Real Madrid, Thibaut Courtois has been in exemplary form recently.

Los Blancos may lack a bit of pizzazz going forward since Cristiano Ronaldo left, but on the back there have been few complaints – partly due to Courtois’ really long limbs and good goalkeeper.

Will he start for Germany at the euro or will Marc Andre ter Stegen take his place on the throne? We do not know, but we can not wait to find out.

Manuel Neuer played a major role in the modern invention of the goalkeeper position and he is still one of the very best garbage masters in the industry today.

When Pep Guardiola made a cheeky comment that Ederson was the best penalty player in Manchester City, everyone believed in him – such is the technical ability of the Brazilian stopper.

Wouldn’t it be great to see him get a drive in front, David James style? He would probably make a brace.

But he is a quality guard and is playing in front of a vaguely meaningful Manchester City defense right now.

Razor-sharp reflectors, wrists like steel, distribution like Andrea Pirlo and a really cool name.

These are just some of the things that make Marc-Andre ter Stegen one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Barcelona has a great need for a rebuild but can take comfort in the fact that the goalkeeper is a position that does not need to be touched. Not for a long time anyway.

When Liverpool spent almost £ 70 million on Alisson back in 2018, social media was redundant with jibber from rival fans questioning the size of the fee.

But they are not laughing now …

The Brazilian has proven to be a game-changing upgrade to Loris Karius, which extends beyond the attributes of both a garbage collector and traditional stopper perfectly.

He has also played a role in Liverpool as a Premier League, European and world champion in recent seasons. Worth the money, for sure.

There are opportunities to see four-time Zamora Trophy winner Jan Oblak when you really think he has the power to lure the ball into his hands.

It is as if his gloves have their own gravity.

He is the best shot buyer in the world and currently Atletico Madrid’s number one is also our top.
