Son Heung-min signs new long-term Tottenham contract

Son Heung-min is close to signing a new long-term contract at Tottenham Hotspur.

Son is one of Spurs’ most important players and he enjoyed a fruitful season 2020/21. In what was his most productive campaign to date, he managed 17 goals and 10 assists in 37 games, continued his fruitful partnership with Harry Kane and earned a spot on this year’s PFA team.

Despite the pair’s impressive form, Tottenham again missed Champions League football. With the permission of their seventh place, they will instead compete in the inaugural Europa Conference League.

With Spurs originating as a club at all levels, Son has been linked to a move from north London. According to Fabrizio Romano, however, the South Korean is close to writing new terms. Negotiations began back in December and a new long-term agreement should be confirmed soon with all parties confident that an agreement can be reached.

The news is a big boost for Tottenham fans who have managed a few months. Already in April, Jose Mourinho was fired as head coach, days before they lost the Carabao Cup final with interim manager Ryan Mason at the helm.

Mason returned to power at the end of last season and despite being linked with Antonio Conte, Mauricio Pochettino and a host of other big names, they now look set to hire outgoing Roma boss Paulo Fonseca as their next head coach.

This is not the only question mark hanging over the club. Kane’s future is still uncertain. The striker has told Spurs that he wants to leave the club with Manchester City and Chelsea both interested.

Kane – who finished last season’s top in the Premier League goal and assist cards – has three years left on his contract, and Spurs are certainly not obliged to sell this summer.
