Sam Kerr deserves a Hattrick when Chelsea beat Birmingham in the WSL

Leaders Chelsea registered their 16th victory of the season in the Super League for women on Sunday with a resounding 6-0 victory against Birmingham City.

After a tight first 20 minutes or so, Emma Hayes’ side broke the deadlock through Sam Kerr when she netted from a close angle. The Australian continued to score a hat-trick for the first half and condemned Birmingham to their eleventh defeat in 18 league games this season.

Kerr’s second came just before the break when she was the fastest to react after Pernille Harder’s nod came crashing back from the crossbar. The striker showed her flying ability once again deep into the stoppage time in the first half when she appeared at the far end to turn in Erin Cuthbert’s free kick.

Fran Kirby scored two goals during the second period while Guro Reiten also joined the team.

The Blues retain their two-point lead at the top of the WSL with Manchester City also winning convincingly at Tottenham over the weekend. The pair will meet on April 25 in what may prove decisive for the title, but Chelsea continue to fight on several fronts.

The West Londoners, who have already won the League Cup this season, remain in the Champions League and FA Cup, which means that a historic quadruple is still a lot left.

Chelsea beat Wolfsburg in the middle of the week to advance to the semi-finals of Europe’s top club competition for the third time in their last three attempts.

In sharp contrast, this latest Birmingham defeat means that they have now gone ten games without a league win and are facing the prospect of being drawn into the relegation battle.
