Germany’s Olympic team is leaving after racist abuses

Germany’s Olympic team has gone off the field during its friendship with Honduras after defender Jordan Torunarigha is allegedly racially abused.

Stefan Kuntz’s side are currently preparing for this summer’s Olympics in Tokyo, with the clash against Honduras their last outing before their campaign starts.

However, the match has been limited after Torunarigha is alleged to have been subjected to racial abuse, which led to the entire German team going off the field.

The match was locked with 1-1 with only five minutes left when the players left the field, and with the German team refusing to restart the game, it has been confirmed that the last five minutes will not be played.

Felix Uduokhai had drawn the Die Mannschaft level after their Central American opponents had taken the lead.

So far, it is unclear exactly who directed the alleged abuse against Torunarigha – and of course it is currently purely accusations – although it seems very unlikely that the entire German side would decide to take such a strong stance without substantial evidence.

While the issue is much bigger than football, the events that have developed are hardly the biggest preparations for Germany’s Olympic campaign, which starts in less than a week.

Kuntz’s men face Brazil in their first outing of the competition on July 22, with matches against Saudi Arabia and Ivory Coast to follow.

It remains to be seen what – if any – punishment will be handed out to Honduras, although there is a possibility that their participation in this summer’s Olympics could be in jeopardy if the allegations turn out to be true.

Honduras have been drawn in Group B along with New Zealand, South Korea and Romania and had prepared for their first game in the tournament against Romania on July 22.
