The Football Association has praised the role that fans played in stopping plans for the Super League.

Ever since the breakout competition was announced on Sunday night, supporters have strongly opposed the idea. This came to a head on Tuesday when Chelsea fans staged a protest against the Super League before their teams’ 0-0 Premier League draw against Brighton.

Halfway through the demonstration, news came that the Blues were planning to withdraw from the competition, with Manchester City becoming the first side to formally withdraw shortly after.
The FA – which was heavily critical of the plans in the past – welcomed the news and released a statement saying: “We welcome the news that some of the clubs have decided to abandon the plans for the European Super League, which threatened the entire football pyramid.
“English football has a proud history based on opportunities for all clubs and the game has been unanimous in the disapproval of a closed league. It was a suggestion that, by design, could have shared our game; but instead it has united us all.

“We would especially like to thank the fans for their influential and unequivocal voice during this time, and who hold the guidelines for football. It is a powerful reminder that the game is and will always be for fans. We would also like to thank the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and the Minister of Sports for their unwavering and critical support for these plans. “
If the British government keeps its word, the Super League collapse should be followed by a review of football ownership in the near future. One possible idea mentioned has been the adoption of Germany’s 50 + 1 ownership model, which may prevent a similar elite club’s power club in the future.
