Erik Lamela goes to Seville

Sevilla have confirmed the signing of Erik Lamela, who is leaving Tottenham after eight years in north London.

Talks between the two clubs over a swap deal involving Lamela and young Spanish winger Bryan Gil have intensified in recent weeks. The new Spurs director Fabio Paratici has been commissioned to refresh a squad that has grown old in recent years, and Lamela is one of their first deaths in this window.

Spurs are expected to share 25 million euros and Lamela to get Gil in, and both his resignation and Gil’s signing have now been confirmed.

A statement on Sevilla’s website reads: “Sevilla FC have agreed to sign Argentine winger Erik Lamela. The player signs for three seasons and joins from Tottenham Hotspur where he spent the previous eight campaigns. Lamela has also played 25 games for Argentina and scores three goals. He will have the number 17. “

Tottenham added: “We are very pleased to announce the signing of Bryan Gil from Sevilla, with Erik Lamela as part of the deal.

“A clubman through and over again, we wish Erik all the best in the future.”

Lamela leaves Tottenham with a mostly excellent relationship with Spurs fans. While injury and fitness battles have limited his performance, he loved his dark art and a spectacular goal him to the fan base.

Signed from Roma in 2013 for a then club record fee of £ 30 million, Argentina’s international endured a tough debut season but shone in subsequent campaigns under compatriot Mauricio Pochettino. He became an important team member in the best modern Tottenham side together with, among others, Harry Kane, Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Christian Eriksen.

In 255 games for Spurs, he scored 37 goals, his most notable being Rabona strikes against Asteras Tripoli in the Europa League and Arsenal in the Premier League last season. In true Lamela fashion, he was later sent off in the match against the Gunners.

He joins a Sevilla team that finished fourth in La Liga last season and qualified for the Champions League. Those like Lucas Ocampos, Suso, Munir and Alejandro Gomez will give competition for places.
