After Sunday’s big revelation, the competition has been condemned by both supporters, players and managers. UEFA, FIFA and the FA also stated that they would be willing to impose harsh sanctions, which led to the English clubs withdrawing from the doomed project on Tuesday night.

EFL, which initially opposed the idea, welcomed the news in a statement: “With widespread opposition at home and abroad, including from EFL, these divisive proposals threatened the sports pyramid’s sporting principles that our founder pioneered over a hundred years ago.

“People all over the world spoke in and out of the game when it was counted. EFL is encouraged by the response and is proud to be part of a unified football system that promotes open competition, gives everyone a chance to dream and continues to inspire generations of young people in communities from which our clubs take their name. “

The EFL went on to demand a fairer distribution of wealth in football, with many of its members’ clubs threatened with extinction due to pandemic pressure.

“The message is clear that the pyramid must be protected above all else. The European Super League failed in part because of a model of distorted and unfair economic distributions, a criticism that can also be leveled at the current financial model in our own domestic game.

“EFL hopes that the same enthusiasm can be directed immediately to achieve the appropriate and much-needed change in the distribution of wealth in our domestic leagues, and we will work with all parties to push for this reform. By financially restoring, we can support all clubs. to achieve a sustainable future, promote the principles that so many have fought for.

“Reforms must also consider UEFA’s own Champions League restructuring, which poses an existential threat to our competitions, including the League Cup, which gives EFL clubs vital income and is the breeding ground for the stars of the future.”
