In a nail-biting conclusion, Kevin Rodriguez netted during the dying seconds, neutralizing Lisandro Martinez’s earlier goal. However, Emiliano Martinez shone as Argentina’s savior in the shootout.

Despite Lionel Messi botching his initial penalty, Martinez denied Ecuador twice, sealing their exit from the competition.

Post-match, Sanchez highlighted the squad’s journey to and beyond the group stages. “I saluted the players for reaching the knockouts,” he remarked.

He continued, “They merit immense praise for their efforts. With more seasoned contenders next time, I’m confident of better fortunes.”

“The squad’s youth didn’t reflect the reality of our results. We must keep faith in this team,” he added.

Sanchez kicked off his stint with Ecuador in 2023 under a four-year contract. His previous success includes securing Qatar’s first Asian Cup in 2019.

Despite a commendable performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers that positioned them ahead of football heavyweights like Brazil, Chile, and Peru, Sanchez was dismissed.

Ecuador’s Football Federation released a statement thanking Sanchez and his staff for their dedication and professionalism and wishing them future success.
