Didier Deschamps remains head coach

France’s head coach Didier Deschamps will retain his role in the national team despite his team’s poor performance at Euro 2020.

After starting this summer’s competition as hot favorites to win their third European crown, Les Bleus suffered a shock defeat in the 16-year-old against Switzerland.

After navigating out of the so-called “death group” where they were drawn together with the 2014 World Cup winner Germany and reigning European champions Portugal, Deschamp’s men got a seemingly favorable draw against Vladimir Petkovic’s side.

After taking a 3-1 lead with just 15 minutes left, France conceded two late goals to take a draw in extra time, and after a goalless 30 minutes, they were released from the competition as Yann Sommer denied star Kylian Mbappe in the penalty shootout.

Despite the overwhelming campaign and reports that Zinedine Zidane would be keen to take the role, Le Figaro now reports (via Get French Football News) that Deschamps will remain as national team coach.

President of the FFF (French Football Federation) Noel Le Graet was asked if Deschamps would be France manager at the Qatar World Cup 2022 and he gave a definitive answer.

“The answer is yes,” he said. “I got it far on Wednesday in Guingamp. The case was decided in three minutes. His will is very strong to continue, mine was too. There was no debate about ‘what do we do’ and ‘how do we do it?’ ‘. “

Since taking the lead as France manager after Laurent Blanc’s resignation in 2012, Deschamps has helped change his national team’s fortune.

After suffering a heart attack by finishing as battered finalists at Euro 2016 – a competition hosted by France – they were named winners of the World Cup just two years later in Russia when they secured their second ever World Cup triumph.
