Chelsea winger Kenedy extends contract, joins Flamengo on loan
Kenedy extended his contract with Chelsea and agreed to return to Brazil to join Flamengo on a one-season loan.
The 25-year-old previously had a deal in place to stay at Stamford Bridge until 2022, although a new, longer-term contract will keep him with the Champions League winners until 2023.
The all-rounder, who joined Fluminense in August 2015, has been on loan four times in the past five seasons, making just 27 first-team appearances for the Blues and scoring three goals.
He has spent the last two seasons playing in Spain, for Getafe and then Granada, after varying successes with Premier League sides Watford and Newcastle United.
During his time at Newcastle in 2018-19, Kenedy attempted the club’s second-highest number of dribbles (61) and succeeded in just over half of his ball runs, although he did not have played only 25 high-level games.
Kenedy continued the same with Granada, whom he scored four times in 28 La Liga appearances, while also placing second in attempted dribbling and completing just over half of the 72 he tried.
The Brazilian also played the fourth most passes in the box last season, including crosses, swinging 63 assists and creating 10 open play chances.
There will be plenty of comforts at home for Kenedy with Flamengo, who shares their stadium – the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro – with former club Fluminense, and he hopes to help defending champions Brazil to another Serie A title. this season.
Manchester United’s Andreas Pereira could also join the Chelsea player in Brazil, with reports linking the midfielder to a loan to the Brazilian side.
