Alderweireld asks to leave Spurs

Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld wants to move from Tottenham this summer and hopes to move when Euro 2020 is over.

Alderweireld is in action on Friday night in the quarterfinals against Italy, where he will probably line up together with the former Spurs teammate Jan Vertonghen.

And Alderweireld looks set to follow in Vertonghen’s footsteps as he leaves Spurs a year after the 34-year-old sealed a move to Benfica, with The Athletic reporting that he has asked to leave the club.

They add that Tottenham will not stand in the way of a transfer as long as they receive a “suitable” offer, with the hometown club Royal Antwerp – which beat Spurs in the Europa League last season – among those interested in a deal. Alderweireld is also in demand by clubs in Spain and Italy, while a return to Ajax has been suggested earlier.

But with Alderweireld under contract until 2023 worth around £ 100,000 a week, it can be difficult to find a suitor.

He has impressed at Euro 2020 with Belgium and has kept clean sheets when they beat the holders Portugal in the round of 16. He was in and out of the Spurs team at various times last season when Jose Mourinho struggled to find a winning formula after Christmas, often with Eric Dier or Davinson Sanchez.

Alderweireld joined Tottenham from Atletico Madrid in 2015 after impressing in the Premier League with Southampton and has since made 243 appearances for the club.

Meanwhile, Spurs’ new football manager Fabio Paratici wants to bring in two new midfielders this summer. The club has already placed a bid of £ 12.9 million plus incentives for Bologna and Japan defender Takehiro Tomiyasu. Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and Lyons’ Joachim Andersen are also of interest to Spurs, as are Inter Milan Skriniar, with whom the club had talks last summer.
