The day after first round of presidential elections in BeninOpponents of the Front for the Restoration of Democracy believe that the Beninese have massively boycotted the vote. Several opponents had urged voters not to go to the polls.
On Sunday evening, the election platform for civil society organizations, which deployed more than 1,400 observers in the field, provoked lower turnout than in previous polls.
For his part, Wilfried Houngbédji, Director of Communications at Benin’s Presidency, confirms that mobilization has been strong in the departments outside Cotonou and Porto-Novo. “We are happy with the vote,” he said.
The day of the vote took place without any major events being reported, despite a pre-election context marked by tension and violence, especially in the center of the country.
In the same area, the vote could not be held everywhere. According to the Electoral Commission, there was no voting in the municipality of Tchaourou, in some districts of Bantè and Savè, as well as in some offices in Parakou. Sixteen districts are affected in total by the 546 in the country.
