Nigerian Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is fighting for WTO leadership

She is the first woman to have held the positionMinister of Finance in her country she has been twice. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala also worked for the World Bank for 25 years. She therefore has an international career and skills praised in Nigeria.

“Excellent qualifications”

The Minister of Industry and Trade particularly praised the candidate’s “excellent qualifications”, which might enable her to “revive the spirit of trade liberalization” in an organization facing many challenges. The last candidate to ride alongside Korean Yoo Myung-hee, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, immediately thanked Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari for his support as well as his friends in Nigeria and around the world.

The Nigerian candidate highlights her experience “at the crossroads between trade and public health”, as she, especially until recently, piloted one of the WHO programs in the fight against Covid-19. Many Nigerians have expressed their support for his candidacy on social media. In any case, the task will be difficult for the future director of the WTO in the light of the global economic crisis and confidence in the organization.
