in Timbuktu, Minusma uses more and more

Due to the security crisis, unemployment is falling in central and northern Mali. Today in northern Mali, the UN Mission in Mali is the largest provider of jobs. And in Timbuktu, for example, where 600 Malays are employed in Minusma, there are more and more women.

With our special correspondent in Timbuktu, Serge Daniel

In Timbuktu, Minusma’s headquarters cover an area of approx. 100 hectares. In the yard, Souwoye Haïdara, 24, is driving an armored vehicle. Other women work in offices, such as Touré Oumou Maïga, from the communications department. She’s pretty proud to be here. “It’s a privilege for me, it’s a structure of great prestige, I work for peace.”

A very beautiful scarf on her head, Ascofaré Djikatamadèle, another employee at Minusma, says she is very motivated. “I am at the level of the most important section in the implementation section of the agreement, I am at the level of disarmament. We worked with the warriors and we continue. It is truly our dream to see all warriors lay down their arms. ”

But like Salet Walett Mohamed or Maiga Nana Aïcha, other interviewed women acknowledge that pay is another motivation. “The pay base of the United Nations is known, it is much more stable and higher,” explains Yéli Fidèle Ouattara. I make better money. ”

Of the 600 local Minusma employees in Timbuktu, about 20% are women.
