I Left My Job for Survival and Discovered My True Path in Entrepreneurship

From survival to strategy: How I turned a hustle into a purpose-driven business

It was the year 2017 when I found myself at a crossroads; I had just resigned from my job, and the job market looked as bleak as a stormy sky. Survival became my only priority, yet opportunities seemed as elusive as the morning mist.

I took stock of my skills. I could type, edit, manage printing operations, and even train people on basic computer usage. It was a simple realization, but it sparked a question in my mind: “Why not venture into business?” That was the seed that germinated into a full-fledged venture in 2018—a journey I believed would be a stopgap solution, unaware that it was destined to become my main focus for the years to come.

Yet, like any rewarding path, this one comes laden with challenges. An entrepreneur wears many hats: you are the face of the business, the engine that drives it, and the fuel that keeps it going. The weight can feel immense.

Each day is a complex interplay of emotions. Sometimes, I wake up filled with vigor and inspiration, ready to conquer the world. Other times? I question the worth of my relentless hustle, grappling with discouragement that feels heavy on my heart. At those low moments, I remind myself of the reasons I embarked on this journey, and I push through the fog.

In a conventional 9-to-5 setting, structure cradles your day—there’s a clear finish line. As an entrepreneur, however, the responsibility falls squarely on your shoulders. If you slack off, there isn’t anyone to pick up the slack, and the repercussions can be daunting.

To tackle this monumental task, I’ve adopted a system that involves writing down tasks, organizing them by type, and distinguishing between the “urgent” and the “important.” I’m learning the art of working smart, striving to ensure that my days don’t slip away unnoticed into the abyss of unproductive busyness. It’s a lesson that’s becoming increasingly vital in this fast-paced world.

Carefully trimming excess spending has become a ritual. By assessing my services regularly, I focus on what generates income or holds long-term value. It’s a practice of intentionality that helps me navigate the unpredictable currents of entrepreneurship.

During quieter periods, I channel my energy into training programs, offering affordable computer classes. These not only keep me visible and relevant in the eyes of potential clients but also allow me to pass on valuable skills to others—a win-win scenario that nourishes my soul.

“One of the most gratifying aspects of my journey is the impact I’ve had on young people. Many have never even touched a computer before our sessions. The satisfaction of helping someone grow is unparalleled.”

Staying Afloat During Slumps

With every dip in business comes the need for introspection. I find it vital to think like a customer. What do people genuinely need right now? If my printing services are overshadowed by the popularity of zobo drinks, then I pivot towards zobo. Adaptability is more than a buzzword; it’s a lifeline.

First and foremost, I pray. In this unpredictable journey of entrepreneurship, carrying faith along is critical for me. Panic can either fortify or paralyze. I’ve trained my mind to focus rigorously on what’s within my control.

Journaling has become my refuge. It allows me to articulate my thoughts and emotions, a practice that alleviates stress. Engaging with other small business owners, friends, and even clients often leads to serendipitous conversations that spark ideas I might not have considered otherwise.

The Perks of Being Your Own Boss

Let’s be honest; the freedom is exhilarating. I’m not confined by walls or rigid schedules. If I feel the urge to explore an innovative idea, I can dive in without hesitation. There’s a thrill in constructing my own structure, taking calculated risks, and witnessing the outcomes firsthand.

There’s also great joy in the impact I create. I’ve been fortunate enough to train young minds and aid schools in managing their examinations. That sense of fulfillment is akin to finding a rare gem; it feels priceless.

Additionally, unexpected opportunities have found their way to me: collaborations, recognition, and referrals emerged from paths I never imagined. The unpredictable journey often yields the best surprises.

Starting small is crucial. Don’t wait for the perfect moment; utilize the resources available to you, right where you are. And while it’s easy to get caught up in trends, stay true to yourself.

The importance of learning cannot be overstated. Tap into free tutorials, read extensively, and consider attending virtual business events. Understanding financial literacy and mastering the art of self-promotion without desperation are critical skills in this journey.

Mindset is everything. Grit and perseverance will carry you through the rough patches. The road won’t always be smooth, but consistency will pay off in the long run.

Surround yourself with a supportive community. The path is less daunting when you share it with like-minded individuals. And don’t forget the importance of boundaries; they are essential for maintaining balance.

Navigating Nigeria’s Business Climate

Operating a business in Nigeria can truly humble you. Electricity outages, internet challenges, and rising costs test your resilience. Adaptability becomes second nature.

I consciously design services that aren’t heavily reliant on electricity. Even the smallest offerings are crafted with that in mind. Flexibility in pricing, especially for students and startups, has been an essential strategy.

Listening to customer feedback and remaining flexible in service offerings is paramount. It isn’t always about being the best; sometimes it’s simply about being the most dependable problem-solver in the room.

My overarching goal—whether I’m running my business or contributing to a team—is to foster problem-solving, add tangible value, and leave people better than I found them. That is the blueprint I strive to follow, my unwavering mantra.
