Ghanaian Amoako Boafo, new famous person in innovative African artwork

In a few months, he joined the club with contemporary African artists with the best ratings. Amoako Boafo is Ghanaian, he is 36 years old and that is a bit of a revelation in 2020. His works inspired the last spring-summer 2021 collection of Dior Hommes, and he now follows his compatriot El Anatsui at auctions. One of his paintings sold for over $ 1 million this month at Christie’s.

It is a portrait of two meters high entitled Baba Diop. A man looking at us, all dressed in yellow. Her clothes are brushed, but her black skin is painted with fingers in a mixture of brown, blue, ocher, green and saffron yellow. That’s the techniqueAmoako Boafo, this particular style which revealed it and today allows a painting like Baba Diop to sell for a million 100 thousand dollars at Christie’s!

Just ten years ago, the artist still worked for the funeral directors of Accra while selling his paintings at local hotels. Until a benefactor finances his enrollment in an art school in Ghana and then in Vienna, Austria, where he has since settled.

It was last year that he left when he was invited to exhibit a series of his famous finger-painted portraits at the famous Art Basel Miami trade show. Art lovers have snapped them all. Two months later, one of his paintings, first sold at auction, reached nearly $ 900,000, or 13 times the original estimate.

It was also in Miami that Kim Jones saw him. Seduced by Amoako Boafo’s style, the artistic director of Dior Homme asked him to collaborate on creating the spring-summer 2021 collection this year.
