creation of a label for bicycle chicken

Burkina Faso will create a label for bicycle chicken. The Ministries of Trade and Animal Resources announced this week. Chicken is one of the most consumed meats by Burkinabè households. In Ouagadougou alone, 80,000 chickens are used every day. But bicycle chicken faces stiff competition from imported chickens, hence the need for a label.

Although Burkina is producing 50 million chickens a year, it cannot meet its national demand. Some producers then turn to imported broilers or cross species to produce a hybrid chicken.

With this label, Burkina intends to market its local chicken. Dr Tegwende Modeste Yerbanga, Minister of Animal Resources, explains: “Bicycle chicken is very popular with consumers in the sub-region. This had also created a phenomenon of competition among local production actors in order to make a difference compared to imported chickens or purebred chickens. The label will also create added value for these households, making it a permanent activity ”.

A local chicken takes four to five months to reach market weight. Purebred chickens only need 45 days. They are therefore much more profitable.

Seynou Ouedraogo is a poultry breeder in the southern province of Sissili. Today, the Burkinabé market is being invaded by blues from Holland, cockerels, chickens coming from Ghana and the Ivory Coast or elsewhere. And so the bicycle chicken label will add value to our poultry. ”

Among the criteria for obtaining the label were maintained: the breed’s animals, a moderate use of veterinary products, a diet made partly of food residues and an outdoor area.
