Tunisia’s Ghannouchi was discharged from hospital
Tunisia’s parliamentary speaker Rached Ghannouchi was discharged from hospital after undergoing medical checks, his party in Ennahdha said in a statement on Sunday.
The party said Ghannouchi was admitted to hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell.
Ghannouchi “left the hospital after undergoing medical check-ups and receiving treatment,” the statement said.
His adviser, Maher Medhioub, also confirmed on Twitter that Parliament’s speakers were in good health, but gave no further details.
Last month, Ghannouchi was hospitalized after testing positive for the coronavirus.
Last week, Tunisian President Kais Saied fired Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi’s government, froze parliament and adopted the executive with the help of a new prime minister.
The Tunisian president insists that his exceptional measures are intended to “save” the country while his critics accuse him of staging a coup.
Tunisia is seen as the only country that managed to carry out a democratic transition between a group of Arab countries that witnessed popular revolutions that overthrew their ruling regimes, including Egypt, Libya and Yemen.
