For Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, rapprochement with Israel was necessary and had to happen now. “The economic situation does not allow us to wait another year,” said Lieutenant General.

The rapprochement with the Hebrew state and the impending lifting of US sanctions should therefore be much liberate the country, according to him. Mens Sudan suffers from high inflation, a liquidity crisis and shortage, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan believed the deal would break the isolation of Sudan with economic and political gains.

The officer estimated that once the compromise was approved, activity would resume. He predicted the return of investors, a strengthening of the exchange rate, better capital circulation.

Sudanese far from all convinced

The war with Israel is causing a stir in Sudanese society. Part of the political class is against it. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan replied that he had previously consulted most streams, adding that 90% of the parties supported the initiative, including the National Umma Party, one of the most powerful.

Its leader Sadiq al-Mahdi responded immediately after the interview. He, who was against normalization with Israel, seemed to soften and specified that it had to be ratified by the Legislative Council. However, this future assembly is not even constituted yet.

The president of the sovereign council made sure to lay out other controversies and denied any American blackmail to force Khartoum’s hand. The lieutenant general even said that the agreement would ultimately benefit Sudan more than the other parties.
