Darfur assaults multiply no matter implementation

Several voices within the Sovereignty Council have spoken out against the proliferation of weapons and militias in Darfur.

Security has not returned to this region of western Sudan, ravaged since 2003 by civil war and genocide, whose violence has left more than 300,000 dead. An upsurge in tribal conflicts is coming as UNAMID peacekeepers begin to retreat. In recent days, several villages and IDP camps have been attacked.

In a few days, new militia attacks broke out at the Kutum site in North Darfur and in the Kalma IDP camp, one of the largest in South Darfur. For Adam Rojal, coordinator of the camps for the displaced in Darfur, there is no doubt about the identity of the attackers.

“It was an attack carried out by Janjaweed militias. It was about half past midnight. They attacked the camp from three directions. They injured a displaced woman, she lived right next to the UN base. The transitional government promises security for the people of Darfur. They talk a lot about it in the media, but on the spot there is no protection for the displaced and the population in the region ”.

Following the Juba Agreements, signed with various rebel groups, Khartoum is expected to deploy a joint security force in Darfur, consisting of half of previous rebel battles and the other half of regular army soldiers as well as paramilitary paramilitary forces. But this strength is wrong by many non-Arab Darfuri in the region.

“The citizens do not trust these joint forces or the Sudanese army because they are partly made up of war criminals in Darfur who caused the expulsion of these people. How could he trust them? ”

Several protests in recent weeks have called for the withdrawal of the rapid support forces from the area. Faced with the recovery in tribal conflicts, the Geneva-based IDP Monitoring Center believes the region is on the brink of a relapse into war.
