Since 2016, significant gold deposits have been discovered in this northern region of the country. The area has since been taken by storm by thousands of Mauritanians and foreigners. But gold laundering operations were not organized. Therefore, the government decided to put it in order.

The Gold Plots are located hundreds of kilometers from Zouerate, the capital of Tiris Zemour, and almost 700 kilometers from Nouakchott. This is where Mauritanian President Mohamed Cheikh Ghazouani oversees the launch of the activities of the new Maaden company: “Gold mining is a recent activity for Mauritanians. Unfortunately, we often register loss of human life due to lack of experience from the artisanal miners. That is why we have implemented a new operating strategy. And education will be a priority for Maaden. ”

“Develop a real economy“

Mamadou Niang, head of the mining sector within the General Confederation of Workers of Mauritania (CGTM), welcomes any job creation initiative: “An opportunity to increase national prosperity because gold still has a value that continues to be maintained in the world. So I think it can develop a real economy. ”

The Mauritanian Ministry of Mines estimates that 22,000 Mauritanian and foreign gold miners are in the sector.
