In Uganda, release relatives of the opponent

In Uganda, 18 activists from Bobi Wines’ party, including three very close opponents, were released on bail on Monday, June 14, after nearly six months in prison. Arrested during the election campaign in December last year, the opposition and many human rights groups demanded their release.

Bobi Wine welcomed the eighteen activists released on bail at his party headquarters on Monday. Among them were Dan Magic, producer of the singer’s opponent, Nubian Li, artist known for his commitment, and Eddie Mutwe, personal bodyguard for Bobi Wine.

The activists were arrested on December 30 for a very eventful meeting, during which the opponent had been helicoptered by the police to his home. They were originally charged with non-compliance with the restrictions associated with the Covid-19 pandemic and then transferred to the military court in January for illegal possession of ammunition. Bobi Wine welcomed this release against bail and thanked the Ugandans who mobilized against their prison.

Many opposition members had been arrested during the election period: In April, the Interior Ministry admitted to parliament that it had arrested more than 1,000 people during the campaign and elections in January last year.
