In full tension with Ethiopia, Egypt is

Uganda and Egypt signed a military intelligence agreement “to fight terrorism” this week. This agreement between the two countries crossed by the Nile comes in the middle of a dispute over river water due to the Renaissance dam built by Ethiopia.

“What affects Uganda will affect Egypt”, is how the number two Egyptian military intelligence officer, Sameh Saber El-Degwi, qualified in a statement from the Ugandan army that the agreement signed on Wednesday. The two countries really share the waters of the Nile.

A military deal unrelated to the failure of discussions on the Great Renaissance Dam, Deo Akiiki, a Ugandan defense spokesman, said: “The signing of this agreement follows a December meeting with the agency. Although there are tensions between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan, “This will not stop us from cooperating with Egypt. The intelligence we are to share with Cairo will benefit the whole continent and it should not worry our Ethiopian allies.”

An astonishing approach

It is nevertheless a surprising approach for some analysts, especially since Uganda has long been an ally of Ethiopia, an enemy of Egypt. In question: his decision to continue filling the dust container.

This attitude is criticized by Fadi Comair, a hydrology specialist at UNESCO: “Ethiopia is inviting itself, because in Ethiopia it is an election and we must mobilize the people around an important issue that is this roadblock. Talks must be resumed immediately, because if this filling takes place without cooperation between nations, we unfortunately risk having a conflict over the Blue Nile. ”

A new round of tripartite negotiations in the Democratic Republic of Congo did not reach an agreement Tuesday 6 April.
