suffered a financial scandal, the mayor said in

In Gabon, in the hot spot for a few days after a scandal of embezzlement of public funds, the mayor of Libreville Eugène Mba has resigned. He would have returned his apron on June 1, according to an official decree published on Saturday. He is the second mayor to leave office in less than a year.

as reported from Libreville, Yves Laurent Goma

The scandal that brought Eugene Mba out of Libreville’s town hall erupted in mid-May. The press revealed that in two days the mayor paid only 338 million FCFA, or 513,000 euros, for a company that would have carried out sanitation work: cleaning gutters and cleaning in certain districts of Libreville.

Verification done, the work was never performed.

During the process, Mayor Eugène Mba finally began work on a major communications team through the media. But it was too late, suspicions already weighed on him.

Eugène Mba, who never commented on these allegations, had only been on the scene for six months. He succeeded Léandre Nzue, the former mayor accused and then thrown in jail in September 2020 for embezzlement of public funds and criminal associations.

Libreville therefore expects its third mayor in less than a year.
