in Kasai, Monusco is preparing its withdrawal
While demonstrations have intensified in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo to protest the massacres and insecurity and to demand the departure of MONUSCO in Kasai, the UN mission will be unpacked in June. A UN delegation arrived on Monday to assess compliance with this withdrawal plan.
In Kasai, Monusco is already almost ancient history. At present, there are no more blue helmets, only police officers responsible for ensuring the safety of UN installations are deployed. The offices are being emptied slowly. A situation of concern to civil society, which made it known to the new head of Monusco during her recent visit.
“Our case should not be confused with any other province. Here is the peace we are insecure, it is not sustainable, it is not yet installed on the entire territory of the province. Not a night goes by without a case of uncertainty being reported. Knowing the weaknesses of those who will secure us, the police and our army, if we say yes to MONUSCO’s resignation, means that we want the situation to worsen because we know how the contribution from Monusco is useful to us. It has supported the provincial government in terms of fuel, motivation … Monusco even followed our troops for mixed patrols, explains Jaudel Nkashama, Secretary General of the NGO Citizen Action for Integral Development.
“We support Monusco’s resignation”
For Lucha, which launched a campaign at national level against uncertainty and for MONUSCO’s resignation, Kasaï-Central is no exception. Monusco must go despite the obvious lack of resources in the province and the continued uncertainty. There are 15 rapes a day in and around Kanangaof which more than half are made by armed men and often in uniform.
An unsustainable situation for François Daniel Kabuka, a Lucha activist in Kananga: “There are situations where our institutions, including our security forces, are not really able to defend our local people. So it’s still a shame all these years that we spent with MONUSCO could help us to have a responsible army, to have a responsible police force, and unfortunately nothing has changed. We support MONUSCO’s departure and we believe that with this departure we will have responsible security forces. ”
Although this departure is accompanied by a fear of the security situation in Kasai, he hopes that this activist will allow the authorities to finally take their role.
