Willy Bakonga, the outgoing Minister of Education of the Democratic Republic of Congo, was disembarked on Tuesday evening, April 20, from a scheduled Air France flight to Paris, at the request of Kinshasa, who is seeking his extradition, according to airport and police sources.
He had been wanted by the Kinshasa prosecutor’s office since mid-April in connection with a case of embezzlement. He is said to be currently being held on the premises of the Central Intelligence and Documentation Center, formerly the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
Mutual understanding
Willy Bakonga’s arrest came just four days after President Félix Tshisekedi’s last visit to Brazzaville, where he attended the inauguration of his Denis Sassou-Nguesso counterpart on April 16, marking a fourth five-year term.
Since Félix Tshisekedi’s arrival in power in early 2019, there has been a climate of mutual understanding between Brazzaville and Kinshasa. In the past, Kinshasa has successfully demanded the extradition of General Munéné, a dignitary of the Joseph Mobutu regime (1965-1997) who was arrested in Congo-Brazzaville.
