At an event attended by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and parliamentary delegations from 68 countries, Pope Leo revisited this topic, which he has emphasized frequently since the beginning of his papacy. He remarked, “It is essential that we remember artificial intelligence is a tool designed for the benefit of humanity, not a replacement for it.” This statement came during the Roman Catholic Jubilee, a sacred time for reflection and discussion.

Proponents of AI argue that it has the power to accelerate scientific and technological advancements, enabling individuals to manage routine tasks more efficiently and freeing them up to engage in higher-value and creative endeavors.

However, Pope Leo urged caution, stating that AI’s “static memory” pales in comparison to the “creative, dynamic” capabilities inherent in human memory. He emphasized, “Our personal lives hold greater significance than any algorithm, and our social connections require a nurturing environment that extends far beyond the limited parameters set by any lifeless machine.

Since taking office in May, Pope Leo has repeatedly voiced concerns regarding the implications of AI on the workforce and has urged journalists and content creators to wield this powerful tool responsibly.

In this rapidly evolving landscape, the Pope’s insights remind us that while technology can enhance our lives, it is our humanity that ultimately defines us.
