Somalia Intelligence Chief Arrives in Galmudug Amid Election Tensions

DHUSAMAREB, Somalia – Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency chief, Mahad Mohamed Salad, landed in Dhuusamareeb on Thursday for talks with Galmudug President Ahmed Abdi Kariye “Qoorqoor,” as friction deepens between the federal government and the regional leadership.

The intelligence chief’s trip is widely viewed as a warm-up to an expected visit by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, who is reportedly preparing to head to Dhuusamareeb in an attempt to ease disputes over political arrangements and the conduct of elections in Galmudug.

People familiar with the discussions say the agenda centers on disagreements over political participation and party alignment ahead of upcoming electoral processes in the region.

Qoorqoor is said to be pressing his claim to take part in the political process through the Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP), while also indicating he could move to another party if that option is blocked. In Mogadishu, that position is being read as a possible test of the federal government’s preferred electoral model in Galmudug.

The dispute comes at a time when the federal government is trying to bring electoral systems into line across federal member states, with Galmudug emerging as a pivotal arena in the wider political transition.

Talks in Dhuusamareeb are expected to continue, and officials describe them as delicate and potentially crucial for the future of relations between Mogadishu and Dhuusamareeb.
