International Jazz Icon Abdullah Ibrahim Dies at 90

Abdullah Ibrahim, the towering South African jazz composer whose music carried the pulse of Cape Town and the weight of a country’s struggles, has died at the age of 91.

Raised in Cape Town’s District Six, Ibrahim drew deeply from the sounds and stories of his early life, shaping compositions marked by that upbringing as well as his experiences with racism and political upheaval.
