President Extends Warm Congratulations to Newly Appointed Pope Leo XIV
President Michael D. Higgins has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Ireland, marking the historic election of Pope Leo XIV.

In his remarks, Mr. Higgins stated, “This is an immensely significant moment for all those of faith and goodwill around the world who look to the papacy for spiritual guidance, moral clarity, and global leadership—especially in a time that his predecessor, Pope Francis, described as requiring the vocation of diplomacy.”
“Pope Leo XIV steps into this crucial role amid substantial challenges facing our world,” he added.
Pope Leo XIV addressed the enthusiastic crowds in St. Peter’s Square today, as well.
The Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, reflected on the joyous scenes of celebration, noting, “The atmosphere in St. Peter’s Square mirrors the hopes and goodwill of Catholics from every corner of the globe towards our new Pope.” He expressed hope that the groundswell of support would provide Pope Leo XIV with the strength needed as he embraces the profound responsibilities of his pontificate. “I know that he carries the good wishes of all Irish people, across diverse traditions,” Mr. Martin remarked.
Archbishop Eamon Martin also warmly welcomed the appointment of Pope Leo XIV. “Pope Leo is a missionary at heart with a rich international background, having served across three continents,” he emphasized. Additionally, he noted, “His inaugural words about peace and ‘building bridges’ signal his intent to foster reconciliation and unity both within the Church and the broader world.” Dr. Martin further mentioned, “The choice of name reflects a commitment to Catholic social teachings, likely to be a hallmark of his papacy.”
U.S. President Donald Trump articulated his enthusiasm regarding the election of Pope Leo XIV, stating, “Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on becoming the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country!” He added, “I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, representing the world’s second-largest Catholic population, also offered her congratulations. She expressed shared “humanist” values with the new pontiff, emphasizing a commitment to world peace and prosperity.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer remarked, “The election of Pope Leo XIV is a deeply profound moment of joy for Catholics in the United Kingdom and worldwide, heralding a new chapter in the Church’s leadership.” He expressed anticipation for continued collaboration with the Catholic Church to promote shared values and the common good.
In a letter to Pope Leo XIV, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni conveyed that “Italians will look to you as a guide and point of reference, recognizing in the Pope and the Church the spiritual and moral authority that springs from its boundless message of love, charity, and hope.”
French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged this as “a historic moment for the Catholic Church and its millions of faithful.” He extended a fraternal greeting to Pope Leo XIV and all Catholics globally, wishing for his pontificate to bring peace and hope this May 8th.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz congratulated Pope Leo XIV, stating, “Through your role, you provide hope and guidance to millions of believers around the world in these challenging times. Many view you as a beacon of justice and reconciliation. Here in Germany, we look forward to your pontificate with confidence and high expectations. I wish you strength, good health, and God’s blessing as you embark on the tasks that await.”
