How an $80 Upgrade Transformed My Virgin Voyages Experience

I bid $80 on an upgrade for my Virgin Voyages cruise. It worked, and I got a room I'd almost spent $1,100 on.

Navigating the World of Bidding for a Sea-View Room

Keeping the upcoming trip a secret from him was quite the challenge, but saving up to cover the entire expense by myself was even trickier. To ensure I stayed within my budget, I opted for an interior room. Sure, I had my heart set on a room with an ocean view, but justifying the extra $1,100 for a little more space and a window was a hard sell.

However, fortune favored me when, months later, I received an email from Virgin’s Level Upgrade program. It offered a tantalizing opportunity to bid on a sea-view room, along with other higher-tier cabins, for a far more reasonable price. It felt like a stroke of luck. Could it be I’d find a way to fulfill my original dream of a room overlooking the sea?

After a bit of research and perhaps a sprinkle of serendipity, I managed to snag the room upgrade I initially craved for a mere $80. What a steal!

Timing is crucial when it comes to bidding for upgrades; each voyage has its own window that closes once cabin inventory fills up. In my case, the bidding portal opened two months prior to sailing, and I decided to submit my bids a few weeks in. Did I have what it took to outwit the competition?

My strategy was clear: I aimed above the bare minimum. I had an inkling that many travelers were just placing minimal bids, curious to see what might happen without investing much effort. While this might work for some, I wasn’t willing to take that gamble.

Bidding just a few bucks above the minimum could give you an edge, but it also runs the risk of being too close for comfort. After all, what if someone else decided to bid just ten dollars more? With this understanding, I committed to my numbers.

I read countless accounts on various cruise forums from seasoned bidders. Their collective wisdom reassured me that I didn’t need to offer hundreds above the minimum to win. I placed a confident bid of $80 on a sea-view cabin, which had a base bid of $45. In a separate bid attempt, I ventured a failed offer of $280 for a limited-view sea-terrace room, which had a minimum threshold of $275.

In the end, my decision to invest modestly but meaningfully paid off. The room I secured came equipped with a large porthole and was lower in minimum bid prices by over $200, a win in my book!

Upon reflection, I realized that my odds of landing that coveted sea-view room were favorable. The majority of Virgin Voyages’ cabins are sea terraces with balconies, indicating that many fellow travelers were vying for those instead. For them, a sea-view cabin would have felt more like a downgrade than an upgrade.

Despite the anticipation, we only received confirmation of our upgrade a day before our voyage. That said, I held onto my belief that we were bound to have a fantastic time onboard, regardless of our cabin’s designation. The truth is, the bidding system is as unpredictable as life itself—sometimes you win, and sometimes you learn.

The beauty of cruising lies in its flexibility: it offers a multitude of experiences both on and off the ship. As such, you have the power to craft your journey according to your own preferences. Whether lounging in your cabin or exploring the vessel, it’s up to you how you spend your time.

I firmly believe that, as with many endeavors in life, attitude plays a pivotal role. The lessons I learned about patience and preparation have not only made me a more seasoned traveler, but they have also gifted me invaluable memories, moments that money simply cannot buy.

So, if you’re planning to bid for upgrades on your next cruise, remember: it’s not just about the room you sleep in. It’s about creating experiences, sharing laughter, and making memories that will last a lifetime.
