The untimely passing of General Shegow Ahmed Ali has left a deep void and stirred waves of suspicion across our land. Surrounded by uncertainty, the circumstances of his arrest, prolonged detention, and ultimately unjust verdict have sparked widespread concern and skepticism. Was justice truly served? Or has it become another victim of power and prejudice?
Beyond his military accomplishments, General Shegow was cherished as a visionary and inspiring leader within his community. He stood as a beacon for the Jarerweyne people—a group often unheard in the Somali narrative. With a relentless spirit, he endeavored to unite and fight for the rights of this marginalized majority. His efforts symbolized the quest for peace and justice in a nation yearning for both.
Emerging from the shadows of unrest and extremism, he devoted himself to reconciliation and equality. A remarkable journey, indeed. Yet, tragically, he was a hero silenced far too soon.
I pen these words not only as a concerned Somali citizen but also as one who had the privilege to call Shegow a friend. We first crossed paths on a scorching Saturday, September 22, 2012, amidst the open plains of Garsale village. The sense of hope was palpable as Shegow led 250 young men, once fighters of Al-Shabaab, towards a new destiny with the Somali government. It was not merely a surrender but a profound turning point in our battle against extremism.
It was a day suffused with emotion—anxious smiles, prideful tears, and a quiet voice whispering to us all: redemption was possible. Alongside myself, there were colleagues from the United Nations, officers from AMISOM, Somali government officials, and journalists—all witnessing a scene that promised new beginnings. We watched as the fighters handed over their arms, opting for peace rather than conflict. These men, led by Shegow, chose to integrate into the Somali National Army, a tremendous act of courage when confronting extremism was nearly unheard of.
These former fighters were swiftly moved to Maslah Military Camp in northern Mogadishu. There, welcomed by then Minister of Defense Hon. Hussein Arab Isse and Minister of Security Hon. Abdisamad Moalin Mohamud, they began the challenging process of rehabilitation and training. What many saw as an insurmountable task, Shegow navigated with unparalleled leadership and deep-seated patriotism.
General Shegow rose quickly and rightfully through the ranks of the Somali National Army. He was respected not only for his strategic brilliance but also for his unwavering integrity. His troops, drawn largely from the historically marginalized Jarerweyne (Bantu Somali) community, liberated crucial territories. Was he simply a military man, or had he become something more—a statesman in uniform?
His vision? A Somalia where ethnic lines blur, where every Somali stands equal—an ambition that transcended mere military success, rooted deeply in fairness, dignity, and justice. In a heartfelt lament, Professor Mohamed Omar Dalha once said, “It is a profound anguish that grips our hearts, tears cloud our eyes—some of us mourn while others celebrate.” Dalha’s words cut to the very essence of the collective grief, highlighting both sorrow and the complexity of emotions currently silencing our government’s voice. Could this silence speak volumes?
Softer than the gentlest breeze but leading with fierce resolve, Shegow embodied intelligence, humility, and principle. He inspired trust and commanded respect. He treated everyone with kindness, holding firm the belief that no nation can thrive while dehumanizing part of its identity. But in embracing this dream, he became a target. Fearing for his safety, he sought refuge in Uganda, spending two years exiled from the very nation he tirelessly served, threatened by factions within President Mohamed Farmajo’s administration.
Hopeful, he returned in 2022, confident a new regime could mean new beginnings. Yet betrayal awaited him. His home was invaded, his arrest shrouded in mystery, and accusations whispers of rumor. Eventually, he perished in custody, casting an ominous shadow over the narrative of his loyalty and service. How do we rectify such a grave injustice?
It is imperative that the President of Somalia addresses this travesty, for the nation’s wounds cannot heal in silence. Releasing the soldiers detained with Shegow could signal a start. An independent investigation into his death is not merely advisable—it’s necessary. Somalia owes Shegow recognition as the hero he was, and it is time his community, long overshadowed, receives the respect they are due.
General Shegow’s life and legacy? A national lesson. May he be remembered for his devotion and dreams, in defiance of any who resisted. May Allah grant him mercy and elevate him to Jannatul Firdaws.
اللهم اغفر له، وارحمه، وعافه، واعف عنه، وأكرم نزله، ووسع مدخله، واغسله بالماء والثلج والبرد، ونقه من الخطايا كما ينقى الثوب الأبيض من الدنس.
May he rest in peace. Aamiin.
