Canada’s Prime Minister Carney Extends Invitation to Zelensky for June G7 Gathering
In a significant diplomatic gesture, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has formally extended an invitation to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to attend the upcoming G7 summit, set to take place in June in Alberta. This announcement was confirmed by a government official, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in these challenging times.
Mr. Carney, who assumed office just last week, connected with President Zelensky over the weekend. According to the official statement, “President Zelensky has been invited to the G7 meeting in Alberta in June,” a move that underscores Canada’s commitment to support Ukraine amidst ongoing tensions.
The invitation arrives at a crucial moment, as the G7 nations grapple with their collective response to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, particularly since the return of US President Donald Trump to office. In the lead-up to a recent G7 foreign ministers meeting in Quebec, the Trump administration notably shifted away from affirming language regarding Ukraine’s sovereignty and calls for addressing Russian actions, raising questions about future diplomatic strategies.
During a visit to Paris and London this week, Prime Minister Carney shared insights from his conversation with President Zelensky, noting on social media that Zelensky provided an update “on Ukraine’s defence and global efforts to advance peace.” Carney emphasized, “Canada strongly supports Ukraine’s fight for freedom against Russian aggression,” reinforcing his government’s stance on this critical issue.
Expressing appreciation for Canada’s support, President Zelensky remarked on social media that his discussion with Carney was “good and substantive.” He expressed gratitude for the assistance, particularly acknowledging the defense packages and the support extended to Ukraine’s energy sector. Zelensky further commended Carney for asserting the necessity to “step up pressure on Moscow,” a reflection of the collaborative efforts underway.
As Canada holds the G7 presidency this year, it will welcome leaders to the summit in Kananaskis, Alberta from June 15-17. Meanwhile, President Trump is expected to discuss his proposed ceasefire plan for Ukraine in a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin tomorrow, signaling ongoing diplomatic engagement at multiple levels.
In the words of Prime Minister Carney, “We must unify our efforts and reinforce our commitments to those fighting for their sovereignty.” It is clear that the G7 summit will serve as a pivotal moment for addressing the complexities of the evolving landscape in Ukraine.
