In the early hours of Friday, the resonant thunder of explosions shattered the pre-dawn stillness around Khartoum, Sudan’s capital gripped by military control. This violence unfolded just a day after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced a humanitarian truce, underscoring the tenuous grasp of peace in a nation ensnared in turmoil.

The Renewed Shattering of Illusions
The blasts, heard around 2 a.m. near the Wadi Sayidna military base, were a stark reminder of the persistent volatility that grips Khartoum. Among those startled from sleep was a resident of Omdurman, who recounted the harrowing detail of the explosions while choosing anonymity for fear of repercussions. Just two hours later, the ominous sound of a drone overhead prefaced another explosion, severing power in parts of the city.
This cascade of violence comes barely two weeks after the RSF captured El-Fasher, a critical army stronghold in Darfur, marking a potential strategic pivot towards Khartoum and its oil-abundant Kordofan region. Khartoum, caught in the crossfire of a ruthless conflict since April 2023, had enjoyed fleeting calm, only to find itself revisited by chaos.
A City Besieged
Atbara, a city 300 kilometers north of Khartoum, was not spared. Residents described being jolted awake by drones appearing just after 3 a.m. Though local defenses responded with anti-aircraft fire, the tranquility shattered with eruptions and fires igniting in the city’s east—a scene eerily narrated by locals, eyes wide with the weight of witnessing conflict.
Although no immediate casualties were reported, the assaults illustrate the cycle of hostility and its broad-reaching impacts. The Sudanese military and the RSF, embroiled in what seems an endless battle for dominance, have yet to comment, their silence a resounding echo in a land surrounded by cries for peace.
The Human Toll
The conflict extends beyond urban tumult, pressing cruelly into everyday life. In South Kordofan’s Dilling, the RSF unleashed its fury on a hospital, leaving several injured and creating a healthcare vacuum. The Sudan Doctors Union reported the devastation of the facility’s radiology department, stripping a community of a critical resource as Dilling remains under siege since June 2023.
Healthcare, much like infrastructural stability, is a casualty caught in the crosshairs of power struggles. The battle has rendered regions isolated, communities vulnerable, and humanitarian needs ever-growing. How does a society rebuild when its foundational services are systematically dismantled?
