Hormuud Salaam Foundation Commits to Providing Land for 10,000 Displaced Somali Families
Hormuud Salaam Foundation Offers Land for Resettling 10,000 Displaced Families in Somalia
Geneva – In a gathering convened by the UN and Somalia’s Ministry of Planning in Geneva, Abdullahi Osman, the CEO of Hormuud Salaam Foundation (HSF), unveiled a substantial initiative to combat the displacement crisis in Somalia. He disclosed that the foundation is donating land worth $7 million to resettle 10,000 families who have been uprooted due to conflict, environmental damage, and climate upheavals.
This commitment aligns with Somalia’s National Solutions Pathways Action Plan, aiming to create a lasting habitat in Jazeera, located to the south of Mogadishu, for communities lacking permanency. Osman emphasized, “Aid groups have long battled with the predicament of providing enduring settlements for those forced to flee.”
HSF, which operates as the charitable branch of Hormuud Telecom and Salaam Somali Bank, is addressing an acute requirement in Somalia, where nearly a third of its people are displaced. “This contribution is game-changing,” remarked Osman in a conversation with VOA’s Somali service, pointing out the challenge of finding enduring settlements for the displaced individuals.
Somali Minister of Planning, Mohamud Beenebeene, along with donors and humanitarian bodies, lauded HSF’s groundbreaking step and urged other enterprises to jump aboard in helping the country’s displaced populace. This year alone, Somalia saw over two million displacements because of natural calamities.
The venture holds the potential to profoundly impact the future of displaced people, providing them a sense of security where over 400,000 currently live. Bereft of options, these families inhabit temporary camps on borrowed land around Mogadishu, dealing with threats of eviction and substandard living conditions.
Attendees at the forum extended gratitude to HSF for its land donation, noting how it reinforces both national and global attempts to develop sustainable resolutions for Somalia’s displaced communities. This donation is also a testament to Hormuud Telecom’s role in facilitating humanitarian cash aid for these people.
