Somalia’s Disaster Agency Pledges to Deliver Urgent Medical Care
The recent inauguration of the Emergency Care Center at Medina General Hospital was a significant event attended by Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre. He urged the community to embrace unity and peaceful coexistence, emphasizing that only through these values can they foster socioeconomic advancement in the nation.
Maalim Abdulle, the CEO of the Somalia Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), was present at the ceremony, proudly donning his blue suit. He reaffirmed SoDMA’s unwavering dedication to ensuring that all citizens have access to emergency medical services.
During his address at the launch, SoDMA Commissioner Mohamud Maalim Abdulle highlighted the vital role that healthcare plays in strengthening the nation’s economy. He stated, “We, as a united community and government, are committed to building facilities that will support our people in the wake of future disasters.”
SoDMA was a key player in bringing this center to life, which comes at a crucial time for Somalia. Prime Minister Barre reiterated the importance of cohesion, urging citizens to stand together for the progress of their country.
He elaborated on the government’s responsibility to enhance healthcare, explaining that these improvements would not only elevate the healthcare sector but also create job opportunities for the populace. Barre underscored various initiatives that his administration has rolled out, which include the reopening of a fully operational blood bank, the launch of an emergency response hub, and upgrades to numerous healthcare facilities.
“This center is poised to be pivotal in providing treatment and care for our soldiers fighting against Al-Shabab, as well as for ordinary citizens,” Barre remarked, emphasizing its dual role in both military support and community health.
The launch marks a significant moment, especially as it follows the devastating Zoobe-2 explosion that tragically affected many lives in the capital two years ago. This modern facility boasts the capacity to accommodate 200 patients urgently in need of care, effectively addressing both man-made and natural calamities.
Funded by contributions from the National Emergency Committee—comprising various governmental ministries, SoDMA, and civil society organizations—the Emergency Care Center represents a vital step forward for humanitarian efforts in Somalia.
Dr. Ali Haji Adam, Somalia’s Minister of Health, expressed heartfelt appreciation to all contributors to this important venture. “This center will significantly enhance access to urgent medical care for our citizens,” he added, reinforcing the urgency of the facility’s mission.
