Somalia’s President Hassan Will Be Accountable for Any Outcomes
MOGADISHU, Somalia (Kaab TV) – In the ever-tumultuous world of Somali politics, a new controversy has erupted as the Himilo Qaran Party, under the guidance of ex-President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, expressed strong disapproval towards President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s recent maneuvers.
The party accused Mohamud of unlawfully extending his presidential mandate and pushing some Federal Member States into a corner to gain their compliance.
This influential political group from Mogadishu warned that such breaches of the constitution might carry heavy consequences.
In a published statement, Himilo Qaran made it clear that it refuses to recognize or condone what it sees as an illegal extension of power, which could open the door to political chaos and fragmentation, undermining the stability and security of Somalia.
“To the Somali people, Himilo Qaran speaks: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud must accept responsibility for any adverse repercussions from this unconstitutional extension imposed on our nation and its federal regions,” the statement declared.
“The Party also reminds the President that the authority once squandered shall not be embraced now or in the future.”
This announcement arrived on the heels of a proclamation from Mohamud’s office about forming a federal electoral board, bypassing unanimous agreement with regional states.
This decision came during a Mogadishu meeting attended by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, Deputy PM Salah Jama, and delegates from three regional states, except for Puntland and Jubbaland, who boycotted the proceedings.
The Himilo Qaran Party stood by the Jubbaland State Government in dismissing the proposed term extension and urged the conduct of fair and unbiased elections aligned with the National Constitution and Jubbaland’s legal framework.
“In closing, we appeal to leaders of the Hirshabelle, Galmudug, and South West State Governments to refrain from engaging in the President’s overt maneuver for authority, a move that disregards the national accord. We ask them not to endorse any scheme undermining the legitimate governance and constitutional pacts of the nation,” the Himilo Qaran statement concluded.
