MOGADISHU (Horn Observer) – At least 20 al-Shabaab militants have been killed and several others wounded in security operations in central Somalia, the Somali National Army confirmed on Wednesday.

SNA chief Yussuf Odawa Rage told state-owned media that forces destroyed bases belonging to al-Shabaab militants in areas between the towns of Dhusamareeb and Guriel in the Galgaduud region.

According to Rage, the forces dismantled explosives planted on the road between the two cities.

“Somali army has carried out operations against militants in areas between the cities of Dhusamareeb and Guriel. During the operations, the forces managed to kill 20 militants and wounded several others. Several explosives were also dug up safely,” the SNA chief said.

The development comes hours after the Somali military in the Middle Shabelle region managed to liberate towns and villages after fierce fighting with Al-Shabaab fighters.

Among the liberated cities are Hawadley and Jameo, located on the outskirts of the Balad district, 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of the Somali capital Mogadishu.
