The UN mission in Libya has decided to announce the night of July 2-3 to the failure of the inter-Libyan talks in Geneva. Delegates from Libya’s political dialogue forum and UN mediators met for four days in the Swiss capital. The discussions were therefore fruitless. The various participants simply failed to agree on the methods of holding a presidential and legislative election in December next year.
At this point, there is total uncertainty about the next step in the dialogue between the Libyans. On the other hand, what is certain is the failure of this long-awaited four-day work session, which was held at a hotel near Geneva, and which therefore ended without a contract. Four days that had been extended to five days on Friday night in a final hope of reaching agreement. But overnight, Raisedon Zenenga, Deputy Secretary-General and Coordinator of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Libya, had to admit that this week of “hot discussions” ended without result.
“The Libyan people will surely feel disappointed,” he lamented, as they still long for the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights during the presidential and parliamentary elections on December 24. “
The aim of this dialogue was precisely to agree on a constitutional framework for these crucial elections for Libya. The delegates had proposed different scenarios and even set up a committee to find common ground. But “no consensus has been reached”, the UN regrets in its final press release. However, the UN encourages members of the forum “to continue to consult in order to seek a sustainable compromise and to cement what unites them”.
